Auto-Route for Cleaning Teams: Closest First vs. Furthest First
A cleaning team gets paid for cleaning, not for driving. Every extra mile between homes is time that could have gone into a bathroom or a kitchen. Putting a team's homes in a sensible order is one of the simplest ways to make a day go better, and it should not take half an hour with a map.
Start With One Team's Day
Routing works on one team's list at a time, which is why it pairs so well with the view described in Filtering the Schedule by Team: One Cleaning Team's Day on One Screen. Once the right homes are on the right team, it is time to put them in order.
In MaidBossPro, you pick a team and a day and choose an auto-route option. The homes are put in driving order from the office address, and the team's phone shows the new order right away.
Closest First
Closest First starts with the home nearest the office and works outward, so the last home of the day is the farthest away. It makes sense when:
- The team starts at the office. They pick up supplies, fill bottles and load the car, then head to the first home a few minutes away.
- The first home should start on time. A short drive to the first stop means the first customer is not waiting.
- Team members live out past the far end. Ending the day far from the office can mean a shorter drive home for the people in the car.
Furthest First
Furthest First does the opposite. The team drives out to the farthest home first and works back toward the office. It makes sense when:
- The team ends at the office. Dropping off laundry, restocking or returning a company car is easier when the last home is close.
- The far homes want early starts. Some neighborhoods are full of customers who leave for work early and like the team in and out before lunch.
- The afternoon has traffic. In some towns, driving out of the center late in the day is the slow part. Doing the long drive in the morning avoids it.
Neither option is better in general. Many companies use one most days and switch for certain teams or certain days. A team whose homes sit in a tight cluster across town will barely notice the difference. A team with a long, spread-out day will.
Auto-Route, Then Adjust
Auto-route gives you a good starting order, not a final one. Cleaning days often have a stop that has to be at a certain time:
- A customer who works from home and wants the team gone before a 1pm call.
- A move-out where the key handoff is at 9am.
- A small office that can only be cleaned after 5pm.
- A home where the dog walker comes at noon and the dog needs to be out of the way.
After auto-routing, move those stops where they need to be by setting the route order by hand. The rest of the list keeps its driving order. That is covered in more detail in Setting Route Order by Hand When a Cleaning Team Needs a Different Sequence.
Think About Big Cleans
Driving order is not the only thing that matters. Where the long clean sits in the day changes how the day feels. A deep clean first thing, while the team is fresh, is often easier than a deep clean as the last stop. Some owners like to put a big clean in the middle so the team starts with two quick homes to warm up.
That is a judgment call for each team. Auto-route handles the driving; you handle the parts that need a person. The cleaning details under each address on the board make it easy to see which stop is the big one.
Routes Change, So Route Again
Any time a job moves onto or off a team's day, the best order may change. A sick-day reshuffle, a customer who cancels, a new deep clean added Wednesday afternoon: after each one, filter the team and auto-route again, then re-check your fixed-time stops. It takes seconds, and the team's phone stays in sync with the board.
Customers also benefit. The customer app shows the day's route with their place in it, and alerts like “when they're next” follow the route order. A sensible order means those alerts arrive at sensible times.
A Small Habit That Adds Up
Routing each team every day, after the jobs are set and before the team leaves, is one of those small habits that quietly makes the whole company run better. Shorter drives mean more time in homes and less rushing at the end of the day.
